This is a thread where general questions about The Song of Night can be found. The thread will be updated as needed.
Q1: What exactly is The Song of Night?
A1: The Song of Night is an alternate universe roleplay website about the Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series by Kathryn Lasky. This means that all events written about in this forum will be occurring after the books, with none of the main characters from the books interfering. All events are therefore non-canon.
Q2: Why should I join The Song of Night?
A2: If you want to be part of a dedicated, growing community with a common underlying enjoyment and appreciation of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, like to write, or just want a place to hang out, then this forum is for you. Writing and roleplaying, however, is the main focus of The Song of Night Forum.
Q3: How do I become part of roleplays on The Song of Night?
A3: Well, first, make sure you have read over the rules and understand them. Any questions or clarifications may be directed to a Staff Member in the Questions board. Next, make a character according to the character template in the Character Creation board. A staff member will either A., accept your bio and move it to an appropriate character archive, or B., ask you to revise a few things in your bio. If Staff ask you to revise it, don't panic; It just means that they think that your character would be better with a few additions. Then, either begin a thread in an appropriate board (I.E. A guardian might be at The Great Tree, a Pure One might be in The Beaks or The Forest of Tyto.) or join an existing one.
Q4: What's an acceptable amount of words in a roleplay post?
A4: Well, we encourage quality of a post over the quantity of words, but it is recommended to have at least a paragraph written out, and more is encouraged. It helps to keep a roleplay interesting and keep it continuing, whereas a one to two sentence post can cause a roleplay to die.
Q5: Help! I can't find my thread in the right board (or) Help! I can't find or access my thread at all!
A5: This may be an error on the part of the staff, and your thread may have been accidentally moved to another board, or this may be legitimate, as your thread was located in the wrong place in the first place. Your best bet is to message a staff member about the issue. In the second case, your thread may have been deleted for a violation/multiple violations of our rules. Staff members generally issue warnings about violations of rules, and in extreme cases, your account may be banned. This means that you must A., listen to staff members and be respectful to them, and B., be familiar with the rules.
Q6: I saw a post that violates the rules of the forum in a thread named __________ in the ___________ board.
A6: Please report the post when you see it. There's a gear icon in the top right of every post, and when clicked on, it brings up a "Post Options" dropdown box. From there, click the "Report Post" option, and a staff member will deal with the offending post/poster. Please, do not irresponsibly report posts. Doing so will get you warnings, and if the behavior continues, you may get banned. Note, please don't be afraid to report a post if you think the content merits it, but aren't completely sure if it does violate the rules. A staff member will understand if you do this. Mainly, just use your good judgment. The staff hopes to not have to deal with posts that violate our rules.
Q7: A person just killed off my character _________ without my permission! What do I do?
A7: This is in direct violation of the rules and will not be tolerated, ever. It is called powerplaying, which basically means that someone controls both their and anothers characters' actions. For example, powerplaying would be if I roleplayed as such: Syron (My character) dove down from above, raking Ryth (Battias' character) with his talons, severely wounding her, before dodging out of the way of a lightning fast attack from Kairo. (Also Battias' character) A proper example of roleplaying would be: Syron dove down from above and put all his power into his attack, raking his sharp talons at Ryth. This gives Battias some room to roleplay. He gets to decide what Ryth does, if she dodges, or if the attack hits, and how potent it is. Notice that you should be realistic- Don't have your character dodge every blow, avoid every injury, etc.
Q8: I noticed that this thread deals with a few interpretations of the rules. Why didn't you just leave them in the rules for us to read?
A8: I didn't leave them in the rules because I cannot stress this point enough- be familiar with the rules! Do this, and you'll be practically golden!
